PHAMExpo Haul! (Professional Hair And Makeup Expo)!

Last weekend, I went down to Pasadena to attend PHAMExpo, which is a trade show for makeup artists, hair stylists, and any other beauty professionals!

I guess I am stretching it when I say “attend” – I worked it! I love going to makeup shows, but am not as much of a shopper, so I usually try to work at them and do just a little shopping here and there – that way I still make money, still get discounts, still feel the energy from and get inspired by the show, but don’t spend too much money, which is especially important now that we’re planning a wedding.

This time, I worked for my friends at Frends, an amazing beauty supply store! You should totally apply for their pro discount program – not only will it save you money, but it’s also called “Frends with Benefits,” so how can you resist?

Anyway, I scoped out the exhibitors before attending, and there was one that I was really excited to check out – Stefania Organics. I am still in the process of finding makeup products that are natural and organic and still perform the way that conventional/pro products do, but I feel confident in using an organic brush cleaner and sanitizer! I was pumped when Stefania, the owner and founder, came over to the Frends booth to drop of some brush cleanser for the Frends team to try, because then I got to meet her without having to leave the booth! She is such a sweetheart and so fun to be around – so I had to go check out the booth for sure! So, my first purchase was a small bottle of her brush cleaner to try – review on the way!

The rest of the stuff I bought was actually all from the Frends booth, so I didn’t have to travel very far! However, I did have a seriously difficult time NOT buying this Zuca bag that is screaming my name in every way possible, from the Zuca booth!

Get behind me, Satan!

Perhaps I will get it for myself as a wedding present! 😉

One thing I knew I needed was a Z Palette and some new neutral eye shadows (I got some from Stilazzi). The palette that has been in my kit quite a while that I use most on corporate, commercial, tv, print, and even the rare bride (I don’t do much bridal makeup anymore) was in embarrassingly rough shape after a couple plane rides and roughness from well-meaning PAs on set – the plastic casing on it was broken and missing chunks, and at least one of the shadows had fallen apart. It was definitely time to move on! I salvaged some of the oft-used colors and put them into my new extra large palette, as you can see!

Closeup of my Z Palette, filled!

The thing I love about the Z Palette is that you can put your pans of makeup from any packaging in using metallic backing that sticks to your makeup, so you can customize a palette with your favorite brands, or if you aren’t a makeup artist/product junkie, you can even have your supplies for your whole face in one palette! Or if you are, you can replace just one color you use a lot, instead of having palettes with uneven usage where you BARELY use most of the colors but they have your go-to! I definitely see many more Z Palette purchases in my future!

Next on my list was a couple Nyx products – a pot of black eyeliner (I usually use Make Up For Ever, but thought it was low risk to give this a shot), and a bright pink liquid lipstick that I WAS going to wear to the wedding I’m attending this weekend, but changed my mind!

Recently, I have been doing a fair amount of makeup requiring lashes, but booking the jobs last-minute and ending up paying way too much at Walgreens for lashes, so I bought sixteen pairs from Frends in three styles so I am prepared for a while!

My last two items weren’t on my list initially, but I am so pumped about them!

They happened to be in the part of the booth where I was working, so after explaining how awesome they are to people, or hearing the other lovely artists I worked with do the same, I couldn’t leave behind! #NoMakeupProductLeftBehind

One is my “Manizer Sisters” palette. My current highlight/bronzer palette has hit pan, so it’s about time to buy a new one anyway! I didn’t know that these were sold together (it’s relatively new), and couldn’t resist the packaging. I mean, I was going to have to buy them anyway eventually, may as well do it when I can get a deal!

Finally, the most ironic product – something to take the makeup OFF! I am usually sad when I am doing this on days I actually take the time to do my makeup, but this makes it much more exciting! It is a special fiber cloth that removes your makeup by just wetting it! No chemicals, no wastefully throwing away wipes!

As I mentioned before, I am all about the natural products, so I was excited for that! And, I recently have started using an AMAZING organic skincare line that I love, but is a bit pricey, and I think this will save me money on cleanser and makeup remover in the long run!

It comes in black and pink, and I chose black – I’m not a pink person, except during the Susan G Komen 3-Day, and I felt like black would look less gross between washes! (You just throw it in your washing machine with your clothes)!

When I got back home, I showed Tommy what all I bought (bless his heart for sitting through it and seeming interested), and at the end he said, “You must be so excited that you were able to buy so many sustainable products!”

I recycled in my intro video as a way to show my passion for the environment! 😂

I hadn’t even thought about it that way! Organic brush cleaner is obvious. The Z Palette and buying individual shadows in very minimal packaging is sustainable. And the makeup eraser will stop me from using makeup wipes on my SUPER tired nights, and minimize the usage of cleansers – score!

I will update you soon with reviews on the makeup eraser, liner, liquid lipstick, and brush cleaners. I also have another set of reviews from my “Bloom” box from Influenster coming up, too, so stay tuned!

What’s the latest beauty product you bought?

xoxo,

Mandie

Why Should I Meal Prep?

Good morning! Happy Labor Day!

I think most people know the old adage “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” I have to remind myself of it constantly. I am naturally not a planner, and whenever Tommy asks me if I want to sit down and plan something, I only do so very begrudgingly, even if it is to plan something super fun!

With age, however, comes wisdom (I turned 34 on Friday), and I am learning that it’s true - life is better if you do a little planning!

There are a couple really good reasons why this applies to planning your meals in advance, and I have actually done a couple separate videos on them - so I felt it was time to combine them into a blog that will hopefully compel you to prepare your meals in advance, AND help keep me accountable to being better about it!

The first, and most likely more obvious reason is the health/fitness reason:

If we have healthy food available, it takes away the guesswork and drastically decreases the chance that we will resort to quicker, less healthy options, like a restaurant or pre-packaged snack! It’s much easier to grab the vegetables that you cut up and put in the fridge than it is to go out of your way to find something bad for you!

The other reason may be less obvious, but once you think about it, I hope it motivates you the way that it motivates me!

Have you ever been guilty of wasting food because you bought it with the best of intentions and it went bad in your fridge? I know I have more times that I care to admit, and it saddens me from both standpoints - waste of resources, and waste of money!

So, for the benefit of your waistline, your wallet, and your overall health and happiness - take some time to plan ahead what you’re going to eat! The benefits are too great to ignore!

xoxo,

Mandie

Fit Foodie Friday - Recipe Roundup #4!

Hello hello! Happy Friday! Here are a couple recipes for salads I think you will love! Salads are perfect for when the weather is too hot to cook, and you just want to get a lot of nutrients from vegetables into your body fast!

I made a couple salads in the past week - a fattier one with protein, and a vegetarian/vegan option perfect for everyone that I think I adapted from a meal option from the 3-Day Refresh (which is on sale this month as a challenge pack - the 3-Day Refresh + Shakeology, by the way)

Here’s a tuna salad recipe that I adapted from my mom’s recipe (which uses noodles and traditional instead of primal mayo, so would not be considered primal/paleo like mine is)! I used more of that Primal Kitchen Mayo I have been raving about in these recipes for Primal Chicken Salad and Primal Coleslaw… It’s funny, because Tommy and I joked about the option they give you to have three jars automatically shipped a month, but we may actually even go through those, so it might not be the worst idea! In case you’re wondering, Primal Mayo uses avocado oil instead of canola oil like most, and here’s a reminder of why most vegetable oils are bad for you

Ingredients
  1. 3 cans sustainably caught tuna - watch for weird ingredients
  2. 4 zucchini
  3. 2 avocados
  4. 1/2 cup Primal Mayo
  5. 1 cup frozen peas (yeah, I know they are legumes, but they add a certain sweetness! Plus, JERF, moderation, etc!)
  6. 1 bunch celery, chopped
Instructions
  1. Cut zucchini into "zoodles" of your choice, either by slicing, using a spiralizer, Julienne cutter, whatever you prefer. Oddly enough, I used a french fry press we bought to make sweet potato fries!
  2. Place in large bowl.
  3. Slice celery into small pieces, add to bowl with celery.
  4. Add peas.
  5. Cut avocado into small cubes, add to bowl.
  6. Open cans of tuna, and give the tuna juice to your cat (if applicable). Put tuna in bowl.
  7. Add mayo. Enjoy!
Notes
  1. This was anecdotally "eye-balled," so feel free to add or subtract or change the amounts. Like most everything, I think this would be good with bits of bacon! ;) Yields a pretty large amount (big glass bowl), but we make it to have for a few days of eating!

And here’s the vegan salad I adapted from a meal option from the 3-Day Refresh (or maybe the Ultimate Reset, but I am 99% sure it was the Refresh)! You know you are doing a good cleanse if the recipes are so good that you want them again after - or if you get to eat at all during a cleanse! 😉

Primal/Paleo Beauty Tip & Product Recommendation (+ Some of my Recent “Work!”)

One of my least favorite questions to answer in the past five years has been “What do you do for a living?”

The reasons I dislike the question are many, and have evolved significantly over time, but I will share with you the two that bother me most lately.

One is that it’s just a long, awkward list. “I change lives and play dress up! I change lives as an online fitness, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle coach, and play dress up as a model and makeup artist!” And then I ask what they do, and it’s often a one-word answer and I feel like I just gave a speech!

The other reason is because I am a model and a makeup artist, but 94.2% (not an actual calculation) of the time I am not wearing makeup, which makes me feel like people will look at me in disbelief and think I am am impostor - as though because I am not wearing makeup that given moment, it is impossible to tell that I am good looking, and that I know HOW to apply makeup. Absurd, right?

Just for a little social proof, here is some of my recent makeup artistry work:

It was a “for fun” submission to Giuseppina Magazine, and we were published! I am excited to work with the same photographer on Tuesday of next week for another magazine submission!

Here’s the thing. I place a huge emphasis on natural products as much as I can - eating unprocessed foods, avoiding chemicals, eating organic foods, etc. I am also working on making my beauty products organic, because our skin is our biggest organ. I am having a really tough time, though, with makeup, because it seems really difficult to find makeup that performs as well the chemical-y kind, so I usually just try to “use makeup sparingly” on myself!

I want to be proud of my natural face, and do it without makeup.

I had already started giving in to this a bit - in my videos, I even stopped worrying so much about wearing makeup. But the quest goes on for the happy medium - finding products that work amazingly, AND go right along with my desire to only put healthy things in and on my body! It is a work in progress.

I have found one product that I am really excited about! It is Dirty Mouth Toothpowder from Primal Life Organics (and you can get $10 off a $25 purchase if you use this link)! Tommy was given a sample at Paleo FX, and I just had to have it! I am excited to try their other products sometime, too.

It has activated charcoal, which is something that I have heard a lot of buzz about in different beauty groups I am in. It whitens your teeth without chemicals! One of the things I love about it is that since it is a slightly coarse powder, I feel like it is polishing my teeth while it cleans them. And the fact that the activated charcoal kind is black makes brushing my teeth fun, because I think of this scene from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure:

Haha!

In addition to that primal product that I am adding to my arsenal, there’s an ACTION you can take to reduce body fat, improve muscle recovery, and have shiny, healthy hair! Does that sound too good to be true? It’s not! And it is something I need to be better at! Check it out:

So yeah - RINSE your hair with water that’s as cold as you can take it! Either keep your whole body in the cold water stream, or if you aren’t up for the full cold plunge, just stick your head under the faucet!

What are your favorite sustainable, chemical-free beauty tips and products?

xoxo,

Mandie

How & Why to Shop At Your Local Farmer’s Market!

When I lived in Wisconsin, I was a huge fan of the farmer’s market. Since I’ve moved to California, that has multiplied… by a lot! There’s so many more fresh options!

Shopping at a farmer’s market is often significantly less expensive than shopping at Whole Foods, or even conventional grocery stores, but there’s an even better reason to shop at them. Check this out!

See? Buying local not only reduces your carbon footprint, but it also helps support the local economy: you want your neighbors to have jobs, right?

Here is a link that can tell you when and where farmer’s markets are near you!

Now that you know where and when to go, here are some tips!

1. If you have specific things that you want - go early! A lot of the time, popular items sell out! And since you’re buying from smaller farms or craftspeople, their supplies can be limited!
2. If you don’t - go late! A lot of the time at the end of the market, the farmers are more willing to negotiate or give deals, because they don’t want to load their crops back into their trucks and take them home, so they will give you a discount!
3. Figure out what is in season in your area, and stick to that if you can!
4. Bring your own shopping bags! This saves them from eventually being in the landfill, and cuts down on costs for your farmers - which keeps the prices down for you, too!
5. Check out what events they have - often there are musicians, and other special events!
6. If you need to save money by not buying everything organic, skip buying the clean 13, and only buy the dirty dozen in organic!
7. Try something new! You may have a new favorite fruit or vegetable you’ve never even heard of!
8. Get to know the farmers! Last year, we spent July 4th with our favorite farmers at their farm!
9. Ask the farmers for recipes - they know the best ways to prepare whatever they grow, because they probably eat a lot of it at home!
10. Know that farmer’s markets aren’t only about produce! I have bought tea (both ready to drink, and to brew later), lotions, soaps, baked goods, prepared foods, artisanal chocolates, greeting cards, tshirts - you name it! Be ready to shop and get unique and often handmade items you won’t find anywhere else - perfect for awesome gift giving!
11. Bring friends! Just about everything is more fun with a friend, and farmer’s markets are no exception!

A note about the California drought… I see jokes about it on social media, and hear a lot of people talk about how it’s California’s problem. Please take a look at this link, which shares information on what percentage of domestic foods are grown in my new state. I think you’ll agree that if you like those foods, it’s NOT just California’s problem… So please, do what you can to conserve water

What is your favorite thing about your local farmer’s market?

xoxo,

Mandie

My Nutrition Journey!

By this point, I consider myself a budding expert on nutrition. I don’t have any credentials (yet!), but I have spent many hours reading and learning about nutrition. Because of this learning, I have changed the way I eat significantly.

Since I’ve always been a relatively fit person (at least by Wisconsin standards), I have not really devoted time or attention to eating for weight loss, or for serious gains (like a body builder), but my focus has been about eating for a long, healthy life with minimal environmental impact.

My eating used to be HORRIBLE, though… I definitely ate the way that you would expect someone who weighs 200 pounds more than me to eat, and that is not an exaggeration by any stretch of the word. I was blessed with a fast metabolism and innate love for exercising, and I assure you that those are the only reasons that my maximum weight never made it over 137 pounds!

There are several reasons I share this with you.

  1. Skinny is not always healthy.
  2. I want you to know that if I can change my diet, you can too.
  3. I want you to know that I still don’t eat perfectly!

This video is my confession to imperfect eating now (which I embrace while I work to improve!) and an even less stellar eating history. Check it out!

If you are interested in learning more, I’d love to share the resources that I have available and that helped shape the direction of my personal nutrition journey. Here are the major contributors:

Food, Inc:

This is the documentary that started it all for me!

Fed Up!

I actually watched this documentary when I was past the point of making the changes it suggests, but Tommy and I agreed that this would be a great introduction to someone newer to the ideas of improving nutrition!

Death By Food Pyramid

This book has GREAT information and is written in a very enjoyable and entertaining way. I would love to buy it for everyone I know! It’s also a great starting point!

The Primal Blueprint

This is what changed my mind from following the traditional food guide pyramid to a lower-carb diet (carbs from vegetables)!

Deep Nutrition

If you want to go DEEP, this is for you! This is very scientific, and takes what I read in the previous two books to another level! If you ever wonder why Tommy and I eat things like fish head soup, liver, boudin noir (blood sausage) or nose-to-tail in general, this is why!

I hope that you found this helpful, and would love to hear about where you’re at on your nutrition journey! If you have any questions or would like my one-on-one help, or have any interest in joining one of my challenge groups to work on this, please leave a comment below or message me!

xoxo,

Mandie

Radha Beauty Products Review!

Recently, I was given a few beauty products by the company Radha Beauty to try.

Never heard of Radha? I hadn’t either! Here is some information about the company that was provided to me:

Growing up in an Indian home in South-East Asia (Singapore), I (Rebekah Letch, Co-Founder of Radha Beauty) was constantly bathed in oils. Oil baths were part of my regime growing up. As a kid, my mother would adorn my hair and skin with different oils and create natural mixtures using spices and oils from turmeric, coconut, argan, lavender, peppermint etc which left my skin insanely soft, supple, blemish free and radiant. I would always get compliments on how healthy and radiant my long hair and skin were. Over the next 10 years, I worked with some of the world’s best makeup artists as a professional ballet dancer and model. However, I noticed that after each session, my face would either break out, or get really dry and flaky. The more I learned about the toxic chemicals in most cosmetics, the more I wondered: did beauty have to be bad for us?
I couldn’t accept that. I wanted cosmetics that embodied luxury and conscience — cosmetics that were sexy and fun, high quality and organic, effective and good for Mother Earth.

In 2014, I started Radha Beauty a 100% pure & natural oils line and a natural skincare line. We combine high performance with natural and healthy ingredients and partner with earth-loving, women-empowering organizations, use Eco-friendly packaging, and we never stop striving to improve our products and our impact on the world. Radha Beauty embellishes beauty with the earth’s most natural oils and our natural skin care line. Our products are Cruelty Free and Not Tested on Animals. We believe that beauty does not have to be bad for us, as in our industry today, harsh chemicals are used in most beauty products. Our professional-level performance and luxe feel beauty line embodies luxury and conscience using high quality and organic ingredients which are effective and good for Mother Earth..

One of the items I received that I was most excited about was the Vitamin C Serum. The reason that I was so excited was that my main skin concern is brown spots, either from Melasma or my worst habit - picking at my skin.

I honestly didn’t have the opportunity to try this product long enough to really see a result, but it smelled good, and if you know me at all, you know that I totally agree with everything Rahda stands behind - eco-friendly, natural, organic, cruelty-free, and effective. What more could one want?

Another products I was given to try was the Argan Oil, which smelled great and moisturized my skin quite well. I also used it on my hair, which felt great, and to remove my eye makeup at night before bedtime!
Yet another that I was given in exchange for my honest review was this Eye Gel. Again, I didn’t get to use this long enough to see lasting results, but I plan to continue using it! It smells great - like cucumbers. Since I received it just under a week ago, I have been applying it to my eye area and forehead every morning and night. One use that I loved was on a particularly dry day here in San Francisco, where I did a crossfit workout and a longer bike ride and didn’t have enough water to drink, I put some on over my makeup in between obligations later in the day. My skin was SUPER thirsty, and that was making me look older than I am, so I applied some of the eye gel, and the little lines and wrinkles I was seeing went away right away!

The last product that I was given to try was the Retinol Moisturizer. Like the others, I haven’t used the product long enough to see results, but I love the smell and packaging and what the company stands for, so I do plan to continue using it!

What are some of your favorite natural, eco-friendly, cruelty-free beauty products?

xoxo,

Mandie

Keep Your Wallet AND Hungry Bellies FULL - At the SAME TIME - by walking!

Of course, we all know that walking saves us money - if we are doing it instead of driving a car or taking public transportation, we are saving gas money, wear & tear on our cars, and any fares for public cabs, buses, trains, etc. And of course, walking is helpful to the environment.

But did you know that your walking could help feed a hungry person?

Or save you money at Walgreens?

I am a fitbit user (send me a friend request, if you are too!). I must say that I absolutely love it. I love tracking my data - seeing how I sleep (this is usually not awesome) and how much I move around. And a couple of my Beachbody team members consistently add me to weekly challenges, so it motivates me to wander around when someone passes me or is getting close. Usually, I pride myself on doing things as efficiently as possible, but my fitbit encourages me to do the opposite - take several trips back and forth between rooms, just to add up extra steps, and so on!

But now I’ve found two reasons to love my fitbit even more!

The first is time-sensitive, at least for now. Starting yesterday, February 3rd, Fitbit has partnered up with Feeding America to donate meals in exchange for calories burned by fitbit members! You can get more information, and fitbit users can sign up at this link, on fitbit’s blog! It makes me happy to know that my walking around is putting a (hopefully healthy) meal in the stomach of someone who needs it!

Update: this promotion has passed, but you can still connect to the Walgreens promotion!

The second new thing I am loving about my fitbit is their connection with Walgreens’/Duane Reade’s balance rewards program. For this one, you don’t even have to use a fitbit - they accept data from many activity trackers! Every mile you walk or time you weigh in gives you 20 points. When you hit 5,000 points you get $5, and you can bank your points up to $50. You get points other ways as well (such as shopping at their stores), but these are free! New goal: pay for my allergy medications (because I am allergic to my own cat) with balance rewards points from walking around!

They say healthy is happy, and I must agree!

I hope to get an influx of friend requests now! Oh! And I have a giveaway going on for a couple more days, and you should definitely join in on the fun! It’s a healthy prize - a yoga mat spray of your choice and fruit/veggie spray by Rebel Green. Click here to enter!

It’s Giveaway…. It’s Giveaway Time!

Hey everyone! I am having a great January, and wanted to do something to share it with you - consider it an early Valentine’s Day present from me to you!

If you’re wondering about the strange blog post title, watch this video so you get the reference! Kind of appropriate for an early Valentine’s Day present, don’t you think? That show cracks me up!

I have been a longtime fan of Rebel Green, for a few reasons - in fact, this is my second Rebel Green giveaway! The first reason that I love them is because their main focus is sustainability, and you know I love that! The second thing that I love about them is that they have products related to two of my favorite things - yoga and nutritious foods (specifically eating those nutritious foods healthily)! And thirdly - they are based right here in Milwaukee!

For this giveaway, I am giving away a Yoga Mat Spray of your choice (comment below to tell me which you want), and a Fruit and Veggie Cleaner Spray!

Stay tuned for more! And make sure you check out the most recent Mandie.tv, which is sustainability-related! (I have no idea why this giveaway is there three times - go with it!).
